SUMMER TIPS

Community Friends:
With summer in full bloom and the rising California temperatures, we'd like to take a minute to address a few swimming pool tips.

During the summer months, the dangers associated with swimming pools pose a significant risk to the health and safety of young children. Each year, numerous children either drown or suffer serious injuries due to accidents occurring in swimming pools.

To avert potential accidents in your pool, it is essential to adhere to the following guidelines, some of which are mandated by state laws and local regulations:
  • All swimming pools must be enclosed by a 6-foot high fence that features self-latching, spring-loaded gates.
  • No child, regardless of their swimming ability, should be left unsupervised.
  • The adult responsible for supervising children in or near the swimming pool must be a competent swimmer.
  • Do not permit anyone to dive headfirst into the shallow end of the pool. If your pool has a diving board, refrain from allowing swimmers to compete in diving the farthest into the pool.
  • The transition from the deep end to the shallow end of the pool is steep, and there is a genuine risk of diving headfirst into the incline of the pool bottom, which can lead to severe injuries or drowning.
  • Pool chemicals should be stored in a secure, well-ventilated location, out of reach of children.
  • If a contracted pool cleaner is responsible for your pool's cleaning and maintenance, ensure that the gate and fence perimeter are secured after their departure.
Here is a national July statistic worth looking at:
Incidents in swimming pools, especially drownings, typically increase during the summer season, with July frequently recording the highest fatalities. According to the CDC, more than 4,500 individuals drown annually in the United States, and a considerable number of these occurrences take place in swimming pools and natural water bodies during the hotter months.
