Dakota Dunes Golf Carts - Message from Union County Sheriff's Office
On behalf on Union County Sheriff,'s Office the CID is sharing the following message regarding Dakota Dunes Golf Carts
To the Community Members and Members of the CID,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your comments and concerns.
I understand the frustration surrounding the 35 MPH speed limit and how it impacts golf cart operation in the area. This is not a new issue. In fact, this exact concern was discussed extensively during our meetings last year as we worked through the new ordinance.
Because of these ongoing concerns, the CID commissioned a traffic study, which is expected to be completed in the next two months.
After the County Commissioners approved Ordinance 2025-002, I reviewed it thoroughly with my Deputies. I emphasized that our role is to help educate golf cart operators to ensure a broad understanding of the new ordinance. This educational approach will continue for a reasonable period as the information is shared throughout the community.
I’m proud to say that we may have prevented a potentially serious incident the other night when one of my Deputies stopped a golf cart and addressed several safety concerns. I’ve reviewed the video myself, and while I can’t share details at this time due to an ongoing review, I can confirm the Deputy made it clear the stop was intended for educational purposes.
I’ve also spoken with Andrew, and I want to be clear: we will not be taking any enforcement action on Dakota Dunes Blvd related to golf carts until the traffic study is completed and a solution is reached that considers all parties. However, I cannot — and will not — ignore instances of clear negligence or threats to public safety in the meantime.
I ask for your support in helping share this message with your family, friends, neighbors, and club members:
Please follow Ordinance 2025-002 as written. It was developed collaboratively and reflects our shared priorities. Don’t read more into it than what is there. Most importantly, drive responsibly and stay safe.
Together, we can reach the goal we all want: a safe, well-informed, and cooperative community.
As always, feel free to reach out to me directly. I’m more than happy to speak with you and hear your concerns.
Thank you,
Sheriff Jim Prouty
