Media Release From The Camden County Prosecutor's Office: Detectives Make Arrest in Gloucester Township Homicide
Gloucester Township, NJ – Detectives have made an arrest in the fatal shooting of a man in Gloucester Township last week, reported Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Gloucester Township Police Chief David Harkins.
Matthew Lucas, 24, of Gloucester Township, was charged on July 15, 2025, with first-degree Murder in the death of 53-year-old Anthony Sanflippo of Gloucester Township. Lucas was also charged with second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and second-degree Possession of a Weapon.
On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at approximately 4:58 p.m., officers from the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to the Lakeview Apartment complex located on the 500 block of Lower Landing Road for a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased gunshot victim – identified as Sanflippo – in the doorway of his apartment.
During the investigation, detectives located a .45 caliber shell casing at the homicide scene. Additionally, detectives learned the suspect had stolen a vehicle from a witness at the apartment complex. The suspect was described as wearing a black surgical mask, head garment with tassels, and green pants.
On July 13, 2025, the New York City Police Department located the stolen vehicle on W. 49th Street in New York City. Lucas was arrested one block from the vehicle for an unrelated crime. Lucas was found to be in possession of the key to the stolen vehicle and a .45 caliber handgun. Additionally, Lucas was wearing a black surgical mask and head garment with tassels.
Ballistics testing confirmed the .45 caliber shell casing recovered from the homicide scene was a match for the .45 caliber handgun recovered from Lucas. Additionally, green pants with suspected blood on them were located inside the stolen vehicle.
Lucas is being held at Rikers Island in New York, pending extradition to New Jersey.
