Alert

Hearst Field to CLOSE Starting Monday, July 21 for improvements

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the DC Department of General Services (DGS) are pleased to inform the community that a renovation project to improve the field surface at Hearst Recreation Center (3999 37th Street, NW) will begin on Monday, July 21, 2025. The field will remain offline until September 9, 2025 in order for the grass to have sufficient time to root and stabilize. Meanwhile, the pool, recreation center, playground, and tennis and basketball courts will remain open to the public and all entrances will continue to be accessible. The field itself will have temporary fencing to prevent entry.

This project includes the following, among other improvements:

·    Installation of temporary fencing to protect the field and discourage entry while the sod takes root

·    Tilling of the surface of the field and removal of extraneous debris (e.g. large rocks and sticks)

·    Irrigation system repairs

·    Incorporation of fertilizer and compost

·    Firming and smoothing the surface to an even grade, preserving the original “crown design” of the field to encourage appropriate surface drainage

·    Installation of DC-cold-tolerant Bermuda grass via sodding
