Suspect Fires at Officers Following Domestic Disturbance Shooting; Leads to Officer-Involved Shooting

***UPDATE #2 - July 31, 2025***

Following threat assessments related to the officer-involved shooting on Thursday, July 24, 2025, in the 900 block of W. 32nd Street, IMPD Chief Chris Bailey announces the name of the officer involved as 10-year officer Alfred Robinson.

IMPD will continue to be fair and transparent with our community while protecting the integrity of criminal investigations and officer safety. IMPD formalized a policy in 2020 which outlines when and how officers involved in critical incidents should be identified to the public. This policy solidifies IMPD’s practice of conducting a threat assessment by the IMPD Intelligence Unit following a critical incident and prior to releasing the names of the officers involved to protect the officer and their families. This policy ensures information is provided to the public as soon as possible.

This incident is being investigated by IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT). Detectives are working with the Marion County Prosecutors Office and the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency to complete a fair and thorough investigation.

IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a separate internal investigation to ensure compliance with departmental policy, as is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory review of this incident as it does for any use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.

On Thursday, July 24, 2025, at approximately 7:20 a.m., IMPD East District officers were dispatched to the 4800 block of N Ritter Avenue on a report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they located an adult female with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s). Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) transported the victim to an area hospital where she was later pronounced deceased. Detectives on scene later learned that that this initial incident began as a domestic disturbance.

Officers at the scene relayed a description of the suspect, including details about the vehicle used to flee the area. The suspect’s description and vehicle information were broadcast by dispatch over police radio to officers on several nearby districts. IMPD North District officers located the suspect vehicle a short time later traveling in the 3300 block of Boulevard Place. Officers waited for additional officers to arrive in the area before activating their emergency lights on their fully marked police vehicles. Upon officers activating their emergency lights and sirens, the suspect driver did not stop, and a short vehicle pursuit occurred. During the pursuit, the suspect stopped driving on at least three occasions, during which the suspect fired several shots at officers. At least one officer returned gunfire during the incident. There were at least two police vehicles struck by gunfire (photos below). The suspect eventually exited the vehicle in the 900 block of W 32nd Street and pointed a rifle in the direction of officers. At this point, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Officers gave the suspect loud commands, “police, show me your hands,” to which the suspect moved out of view of the officers. IMPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) officers responded to the scene with a ballistic shield and approached where the suspect was last seen. The suspect was taken into custody by officers who also rendered first-aid to the suspect. IEMS arrived on scene, and the suspect was then transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The suspect was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

No uninvolved citizens were injured during this incident.

Detectives located a rifle next to the suspect (a photo of the rifle is attached). Another firearm was also located in the suspect’s vehicle (a photo of that firearm is attached).

The officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, which were activated during this incident.

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office (MCCO) will be assisting and will determine the exact manner and cause of death. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will release the decedent's names once a proper next-of-kin notification has been made. Detectives are confident there is no ongoing threat to the community. There is no suspect outstanding.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.

A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. The officer(s) who fired their gun(s) have been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure in an officer involved shooting investigation.

The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing for any attempted use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.

The Police Officer Support Team (POST) responded to provide peer support for officers.  The IMPD Chaplain’s Office responded to assist with those involved.

The IMPD Victims Assistance unit responded to assist officers and detectives.
