Extreme Heat & Severe Weather Advisory – West Windsor Township

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning and Heat Advisory for our area from 10 AM to 9 PM Friday, July 25. Heat index values will range between 100 and 108 degrees, posing serious risks for heat-related illness.

Severe Thunderstorm Risk is also elevated for Friday afternoon into the evening (3 PM to 9 PM). Damaging wind gusts, possible hail, and flash flooding from heavy downpours are all threats. With recent fatalities in New Jersey due to lightning strikes, the danger is real.

Community Safety Reminders:

For Everyone:

• Stay hydrated. Drink water often, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

• Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

• Never leave children, adults, or pets in parked vehicles — not even for a minute.

• Seek air conditioning or cooling centers if you don’t have A/C.

For Seniors:

• Check on elderly family members and neighbors.

• Keep living spaces cool with fans and shades.

• Avoid alcohol and caffeine which can dehydrate you faster.

For Pets:

• Pavement temperatures can reach over 130°F — enough to burn paws in minutes.

• Pick them up or carry them across streets if you need to walk.

• Bring water and never leave them in cars.

• Limit walks to early morning or after sundown.

Storm Safety:

• Stay indoors if storms approach. Lightning can strike miles from the storm’s center.

• Secure outdoor items that could become projectiles.

• Have flashlights and charged phones ready in case of power outages.

This is a dangerous weather setup. The West Windsor Office of Emergency Management and West Windsor Police Department are closely monitoring the forecast in cooperation with Mayor Marathe.
