San Bernardino County Inmate Dies Days After Attempting to Take His Own Life at Courthouse

DECEDENT: Casey Duren, a 40-year-old resident of Muskogee, OK
SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, Casey Duren, an inmate from the West Valley Detention Center, was transported to the Victorville Courthouse for a scheduled arraignment. Duren participated in the hearing and was escorted to a holding cell where he was the only person in the cell. At about 10:46 a.m., during a safety check, a deputy found Duren unresponsive. Duren attempted to take his life and was transported to a hospital.
On Thursday, July 24, 2025, Duren was pronounced deceased at the hospital and the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division assumed the investigation.
Duren was arrested on July 3, 2025, by the California Highway Patrol, in Barstow, for felony evading and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was booked in at the High Desert Detention Center and later transferred to the West Valley Detention Center.
