Public Information Release
Mitchellville City Water and Sewer Department
Date: July 29, 2025
The City of Mitchellville is monitoring a significant weather alert issued by the National Weather Service. Forecasts indicate the potential for heavy rainfall exceeding 5 inches over the next 48 hours, particularly between Pleasant Hill and Grinnell, just south of Interstate 80. Given that the ground is already saturated, the risk of flooding is elevated and may surpass levels observed in recent years.
In response, Mitchellville’s Water and Sewer Department is collaborating with Polk and Jasper County Emergency Management, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), ISG, Public Works, the Fire and Police Departments, and Mayor Trobaugh to coordinate preventive measures and protect local property and services.
Precautions for Residents:
- Due to saturated conditions, flooding of property and potential sewage backups are possible. Please take immediate measures to safeguard valuables in basements and remain alert to signs of water intrusion or sewer backup.
- The DNR has authorized the city to prioritize protection of property in this emergency.
- Additional pumping equipment, including a six-inch pump from Jasper County Emergency Management, has been deployed to manage sewer operations and help prevent backups into homes.
- Remain vigilant for floodwaters on streets. Do not drive through standing or moving water, as this poses significant safety hazards.
Mayor Trobaugh and the City’s emergency response team—including Water/Wastewater Superintendent Chris Pruett, Fire Chief Mike Twohey, Police Chief Bill Daggett, and city staff—are continuously monitoring the situation and prepared to respond to protect the community. Please report urgent issues promptly using the contact information above.
Your cooperation is essential to the safety and resilience of our community.
Instructions:
Please prepare for additional rain.
