***UPDATE #4 - August 25, 2025***

Tyson Reach, the suspect who was shot during this incident, succumbed to his injuries on August 22, 2025, at Eskenazi Hospital.

#####***UPDATE #3 - August 5, 2025***

On August 4th, 2025, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Violent Crimes Unit (VCU), along with IMPD Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT) and IMPD’s K9 Unit, took the fourth and final suspect from last week’s officer-involved shooting into custody. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Mandrell Ballard, was placed under outright arrest for resisting by fleeing, as well as felony level battery with a weapon from a previous case. Detectives are still investigating the original carjacking

Tyson Reach, the alleged shooter, remains at the hospital in critical condition.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a final charging decision. All parties are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Following threat assessments related to the officer-involved shooting on July 29th, 2025, in the 2100 block of Emrich Lane, IMPD Chief Chris Bailey announced the officer involved as three-year veteran Alejandro Renteria.

IMPD will continue to be fair and transparent with our community while protecting the integrity of criminal investigations and officer safety. IMPD formalized a policy in 2020 which outlines when and how officers involved in critical incidents should be identified to the public. This policy solidifies IMPD’s practice of conducting a threat assessment by the IMPD Intelligence Unit following a critical incident and prior to releasing the names of the officers involved to protect the officer and their families. This policy ensures information is provided to the public as soon as possible.

This incident is being investigated by IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT). Detectives are working with the Marion County Prosecutors Office and the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency to complete a fair and thorough investigation.

IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a separate internal investigation to ensure compliance with departmental policy, as is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory review of this incident as it does for any use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.

The information provided is preliminary and subject to change.

On July 29th, 2025, shortly after 2:00 pm, an IMPD officer began following a carjacked vehicle near the intersection of West 16th Street and North Harding Street after running a license plate check.

The vehicle entered a nearby apartment complex and at that point, the IMPD Northwest District officer, in a fully marked car, activated his emergency lights to stop the vehicle. The carjacked vehicle pulled into a parking spot in the apartment complex, located at 2100 Emrich Lane. A total of four suspects were in the vehicle and one male passenger immediately ran from the vehicle.

At that moment, the officer attempted to take the driver into custody and had him seated on the ground. As this was happening, two additional passengers exited the vehicle. One of those passengers walked around to the front of the vehicle and began firing in the direction of the officer. The IMPD officer was struck by gunfire at least three times, and the officer returned fire, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.

The IMPD officer then rendered aid to himself by applying a tourniquet. At least two community members ran to the officer, following the shooting, to assist.

Additional officers responded to the scene; the injured officer was transported by another IMPD officer to an area hospital and is in stable condition. Officers also rendered aid to the suspect who was shot.

A total of three suspects were taken into custody. Detectives believe the shooter is in custody at the hospital. One suspect is still outstanding.

Detectives located a firearm with an extended magazine in the parking lot of the complex, next to where the suspect who was shot was located. An additional firearm was found in a hallway of a nearby apartment, where one suspect was found.

The Northwest District Officer has been on the department for nearly four years.

No uninvolved community members were injured during this incident.

The officer was equipped with body-worn cameras and in-car video, which were activated during this incident.

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.

A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. The officer who fired their gun has been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure in an officer involved shooting investigation.

The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing for any attempted use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.

The Police Officer Support Team (POST) responded to provide peer support for officers.  The IMPD Chaplain’s Office responded to assist with those involved.

The IMPD Victims Assistance unit responded to assist officers and detectives.

Anyone with information is asked to call. Sergeant Brian Lambert at the homicide office by calling 317-327-3475.  Alternatively, anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 317-262-TIPS.
