Tsunami Advisory Issued for the Outer Coast of Washington State

Below is information from Washington State Emergency Management Division (EMD) regarding the current tsunami advisory that is in effect for the outer coast of Washington state. At this time, tsunami waves around 1 foot are expected to hit the outer coast starting at around 11:35 PM. Waves are not expected to reach the inner coast, but if they do it would be around 2:00 AM. Inundation is not expected from this event. City Emergency Management is monitoring the situation and the community will be notified if the situation changes.

Statement from Washington State EMD:

UPDATED at 7:30 p.m.: This TSUNAMI ADVISORY is now just for the outer coast of Washington state and does NOT include the inner counties of King, Pierce and Thurston. Ocean sensors indicate a possible one foot wave at some of the outer coast. There may still be some unusual current on the inner coast.

We still advise residents to stay OUT OF THE WATER & AWAY FROM THE SHORE, which includes HARBORS and MARINAS due to strong currents & dangerous waves. Details here: https://tsunami.gov/.../07/29/t06p1k/3/WEAK51/WEAK51.txt

A #tsunami advisory is issued when a tsunami with potential to generate strong currents/waves dangerous to those in/near the water is expected. The threat may continue for many hours but significant flooding on land is not expected. #TsunamiAdvisory

A #tsunami advisory means DANGEROUS waves are on the way. STRONG and unusual currents are expected along the coast and in bays, marinas, and harbors. MOVE INLAND TO HIGH GROUND & AWAY FROM THE SHORE. More at www.tsunami.gov. #WaState #TsunamiAdvisory

Remember, the first wave of a #tsunami may not be the largest or the most destructive. Stay away from the shore for the duration of the tsunami. #WaState #TsunamiAdvisory #wawx

DO NOT head to the beach or marina to watch the #tsunami waves come in. You not only put yourself in danger when you do this, you also put any emergency responders in danger who may need to come to your rescue. #WaState #TsunamiAdvisory #wawx
