SAN MATEO POLICE INVESTIGATE TRAFFIC FATALITY

Major traffic collision results in one death and three injuries on Alameda de las Pulgas.

San Mateo, CA – On Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 6:17pm, the San Mateo Police Department along with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a major traffic collision in the area of Alameda de las Pulgas and Highway 92. On arrival, officers located two vehicles involved, a Ford SUV and a Toyota Prius. The driver of the Prius, a 30-year-old female, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Also in the vehicle were her two young children (males aged 5 & 7) who were transported to the hospital for care and were last listed in critical but stable condition. The male driver of the Ford was also transported to the hospital for minor injuries. He was the sole occupant of his vehicle.

The preliminary investigation shows the Ford was exiting the eastbound HWY 92 off-ramp at Alameda de las Pulgas and had the red light, while the Prius was traveling northbound on Alameda on the green. The driver of the Ford did not stop for the red light and broad-sided the Prius. (Reports about the family being in the SUV, an SUV hitting a light pole, and a car going off the overpass are all false reports). Police are currently working to determine why the driver of the Ford failed to stop for the red light, but we can confirm he was not driving impaired. His identity is being withheld at this time.

To conduct our investigation, we had to close both the eastbound on-ramp and off-ramps for Highway 92, as well as Alameda de las Pulgas in both directions from W. 20th Ave. to Barneson Ave. This lasted for approximately 4 hours, but all roads have since been reopened.

Our investigation continues as we send our condolences to the family as they process this tragedy. We have offered support via our Chaplain and Peer Support programs, as well as through our Youth Services Unit/PAL.
