Flash Flooding Impacts McDowell County: Emergency Responders Conduct Water Rescues
McDowell County, NC — On the evening of August 1st, McDowell County experienced flash flooding after slow-moving thunderstorms dropped 5 to 6 inches of rain in isolated areas. The National Weather Service issued multiple flash flood warnings throughout the night as conditions deteriorated rapidly.
Emergency personnel responded to several incidents across the county, including the rescue of three residents and multiple pets from floodwaters on Owl Hollow Road off Jacktown Rd. Additionally, crews were dispatched to Spacious Skies Campground off Deacon Drive, where flash flooding from North Muddy Creek damaged several campers and a vehicle. All individuals and pets at the campground were safely accounted for.
Flooding was also reported Friday evening along Young’s Fork near Rutherford Road in Marion, where water levels rose quickly, prompting additional response efforts.
“We are grateful for the rapid response by all emergency agencies on Friday night,” said Emergency Services Director Will Kehler. “We are very fortunate that no injuries occurred as a result of this flash flooding that quickly developed south of Marion.”
Residents are encouraged to remain alert during heavy rainfall events and to never drive through flooded roadways.
