A Message from Mayor Dee Dee Cavanaugh
At the August 4 City Council meeting, I addressed the community regarding the disturbing incident that occurred on August 1 at Regal Plaza. In the days since, City leadership has engaged in ongoing conversations with residents, community groups, and one another. This message, shared on behalf of the entire City Council, reflects the grief, questions, and concern this incident has rightfully sparked, and our shared commitment to addressing it with care, transparency, and accountability.
The video showing the violent altercation involving local teenagers is heartbreaking. What happened to Michael Robinson has deeply shaken our entire community. We extend our support to Michael, his family, and all in Simi Valley who have been impacted by this hateful and traumatic incident.
Let me be clear: violence, harassment, racism, discrimination, the use of racial slurs, and gang-related activity have no place in Simi Valley. We will not tolerate conduct that threatens the safety, dignity, or well-being of anyone who lives, works, or visits our City. This incident has understandably left many feeling unsafe, fearful, and mistrustful. That is unacceptable. Simi Valley must be a place where people are safe, respected, and valued.
The Simi Valley Police Department is conducting a thorough investigation in coordination with the Ventura County District Attorney's Office and the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. Several juveniles have been arrested, and as the investigation continues, additional individuals may be identified, and further charges may be filed. While the legal process takes time, it is critical to ensure accuracy and accountability. Updates will be shared as information becomes available and as permitted by law. If you have information that may assist the investigation, please contact Sergeant Brian Murray at (805) 583-6906. For media information, contact Sergeant Rick Morton at (805) 797-2898.
As a City, we are guided by our mission to provide a safe and healthy living environment, responsive public service, and accountable, accessible government. We remain committed to fostering an atmosphere that encourages community involvement and ensuring our actions reflect the values we uphold as a community.
Our work does not stop here. We remain committed to listening to citizens, engaging in ongoing conversations, and taking meaningful steps that foster safety, healing, and trust. Together, we will continue building a stronger, more inclusive Simi Valley, where voices are heard and people feel a true sense of belonging.
Sincerely,
Dee Dee Cavanaugh
Mayor
