Advisory

School Starts Tomorrow - Please Drive Safely!

Tomorrow (Tuesday) is the first day of school in Moraga.  Traffic safety is more important than ever as our children are walking or biking to and from school and may be more focused on school than the traffic around them.  Here are some traffic safety tips to help prevent accidents and save lives:

SLOW DOWN!! – School zones are 25 MPH zones.  Due to road conditions and pedestrians, the safe speed actually may be lower.  Remember, even at 25 MPH, your vehicle’s stopping distance is about 120 feet.

Stop and Yield to Pedestrians in Crosswalks – Drivers are required to stop until the pedestrian is completely out of the crosswalk (not just your lane) before you drive through it.

You Are Required to Stop When a School Bus Stops and is Displaying Flashing Red Lights – You must STOP both when you are BEHIND the bus and when APPROACHING the bus from the FRONT.

E-Bikes v. E-Scooters v. Electric Cycles– Many parents have purchased e-bikes for their kids.  E-bikes that are ridden by unlicensed juveniles are limited to a maximum speed of 25 MPH.  E-scooters or e-cycles can often go faster, don’t usually have pedals, and riders must have a driver's license or permit to operate them.  If you have a question about what you have purchased, please contact the Moraga Police.

Don’t Text and Drive – only use the hands-free option for your phone and do not become distracted while driving.  It is illegal to hold or manipulate your cell phone in any way while driving.  Note:  holding your phone in your hand and using the speaker is not “hands-free” and is ILLEGAL.

Bicyclists are required to follow the same rules of the road as vehicles, regardless of whether they are riding an e-bike or a traditional bike.  Bicyclists are responsible for knowing the rules of the road and following them.

Talk with Your Teens About Safe Driving – Car crashes are one of the leading causes of teen death – 40% of these crashes involve speed while 25% occur during or after school hours.

The Moraga Police will be actively enforcing traffic laws around our schools as we work to keep our streets safe for kids.  Please do not become a statistic by receiving a citation, or worse, being involved in an accident.

For questions about traffic safety, please contact the Moraga Police at 925-888-7055.  To report a non-emergency incident, please call our Dispatch Center at 925-284-5010.  For Emergencies – dial 9-1-1.

Please drive safely and slowly while watching out for kids on and around our roads and streets.
