BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS

School days create traffic congestion. School buses are collecting their passengers, children on bicycles are rushing to arrive at school before the bell rings, and stressed parents are attempting to drop their children off before heading to work. Drivers must reduce their speed and remain vigilant when children are around, particularly during the times before and after school.

Here are a few reminders as we welcome in the new school year:

SCHOOL DROP-OFFS

  • Avoid double parking; it obstructs visibility for other children and vehicles.
  • Refrain from loading or unloading children across the street from the school.
  • Utilize carpooling to reduce the number of vehicles on school grounds.

SHARING THE ROAD WITH YOUNG PEDESTRIANS

  • Do not obstruct the crosswalk when you are halted at a red light or waiting to turn, as this forces pedestrians to navigate around your vehicle; such actions could place them in the trajectory of oncoming traffic.
  • In a school zone where flashing lights are activated, it is essential to stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection.
  • Always come to a complete stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard who is displaying a stop sign.
  • Exercise heightened vigilance to look for children in school zones, adjacent to playgrounds and parks, and throughout all residential neighborhoods.
  • Refrain from honking your horn or revving your engine to intimidate a pedestrian, even if you possess the right of way.
  • Never overtake a vehicle that has stopped to let pedestrians cross.
  • Always exercise utmost caution to prevent striking pedestrians, regardless of who has the right of way.

SHARING THE ROAD WITH SCHOOL BUSES

  • Never attempt to pass a bus from behind, or from either direction on an undivided road, when it is stationary to load or unload children.
  • If the yellow or red lights are illuminated and the stop arm is extended, all traffic must come to a halt.
  • The area extending 10 feet around a school bus is particularly hazardous for children; ensure you stop at a sufficient distance to allow them to board and disembark from the bus safely.
  • Stay vigilant; children can be unpredictable, often disregarding dangers and taking unnecessary risks.

SHARING THE ROAD WITH BICYCLISTS

  • When overtaking a bicyclist, proceed in the same direction at a slow speed, maintaining a distance of at least 3 feet between your vehicle and the cyclist.
  • When making a left turn and a bicyclist is approaching from the opposite direction, allow the rider to pass before proceeding.
  • If you are turning right and a bicyclist is approaching from behind on the right, permit the rider to navigate through the intersection first, and always utilize your turn signals.
  • Be cautious of bike riders who may turn in front of you without signaling or looking; children, in particular, are prone to this behavior.
  • Exercise heightened awareness in school zones and residential areas.
  • Be alert for bicycles emerging from driveways or from behind parked vehicles.
  • Always check your side mirrors before opening your door.

By taking extra care and being cautious, both drivers and pedestrians can coexist safely in school zones.
