Discoloration of Water in Homes
With regards to the discoloration of water in various homes throughout the Borough we would like to announce the following:
Our treatment system is working correctly, and all testing is verifying that on an ongoing basis. The problem is most likely due to the fact we had to curtail flushing the distribution system last fall because of the drought emergency declared by the governor, and the Borough had to restrict outdoor water usage; therefore could not simultaneously be flushing hydrants, increasing our consumption by hundreds of thousands of gallons. As a result, gradually there is an increase in sediment (mainly iron) from the pipes in the system which has not been properly cleaned out through normal periodic flushing. This will be done in the fall when normally the flushing of the hydrants occur.
For the time being if your water is discolored, please do the normal procedures you would follow during the flushing of hydrants; which is to run the water until it is clear.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office.
