Wilmington Police, victim services partners announce September 18 Community Resource Fair and Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims event:
As the Wilmington Police Department continues its monthly Community Resource Fair series, our next program will be held outdoors on Thursday, September 18 from 4-6 p.m. in Joe White Memorial Park (Vandever Avenue and Thatcher Street).
In collaboration with our victim services partners – including the Delaware Victims’ Rights Task Force and the WPD Victim Services Unit – this month’s program will include our annual Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims.
“Each year, we look forward to collaborating with our partners and integrating the annual Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims into our September Community Resource Fair,” said Chief Wilfredo Campos. “Victim services professionals in Wilmington and throughout Delaware provide exceptional assistance and compassionate support to those affected by crime and violence, and we are proud to support this important annual tribute to those who have been killed across our state.”
This program will include a range of partner organizations offering free resources to the public, as well as victim services groups and others seeking to support individuals and families who have been affected by crime and violence.
“Every September, we observe a National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. The Delaware Victims’ Rights Task Force is honored to hold an annual event to honor the lives of murder victims in the First State,” said Jennifer Kutney-Soper of the Delaware Department of Justice, and a member of the Victims’ Rights Task Force. “We hope you will join us in memorializing those we have lost, supporting their surviving family and friends, and recognizing the lasting impact of violence in our communities as we work towards safer communities. We are grateful for the continued of the Wilmington Police Department as we partner for our third year in a row to host this meaningful event.”
In addition to bringing together social service, public health, governmental and nonprofit partners for this two-hour event, we will also organize a Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims program beginning at 5:30 p.m., with speakers and a presentation.
Since the launch of monthly Community Resource Fair series in 2023, events have been held at the Police Athletic League of Wilmington, the William “Hicks” Anderson Community Center, the MSK Community Center, Latin American Community Center, Ezion-Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, Helen Chambers Park, Cool Springs Park, Haynes Park, Judy Johnson Park, Herman Holloway, Sr. Park, Kosciuszko Park, Tilton Park, Kirkwood Park and Joe White Memorial Park.
In the event of inclement weather, the rain date for this event will be Thursday, September 25, at the same time and location.
This event is free and open to the public, and there will be food and plenty of public safety-related giveaways.
Pre-registration for partners/vendors is required, and is limited to government and nonprofit organizations providing free services to Wilmington residents. Partners seeking to register can contact David Karas at [email protected].
