Boil Water Advisory in Effect

(Boil Water Advisory guidance recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))

Drinking and Cooking: Use commercially bottled water or boiled water after it has cooled for drinking and to prepare and cook food.

Infant Feeding: Breastfeeding is the best option for feeding an infant. If you feed your child formula, provide ready-to-use formula if possible.

Handwashing: You can use tap water and soap to wash your hands during a boil water advisory.

Bathing and Showering: Avoid swallowing water while bathing or showering. The Manchester Utilities Authority has reported that our water is safe for showering, but we should limit shower time, especially to conserve water. Use caution when bathing infants and young children. Consider giving them a sponge bath to reduce the chance of them swallowing water.

Brushing Teeth: Brush your teeth using boiled water after it has cooled or commercially bottled water. Do not use tap water unless you have boiled it first.

Washing Dishes: If possible, use disposable plates, cups, and utensils during a Boil Water Advisory. Sanitize all baby bottles. To wash dishes by hand: 1. Wash and rinse the dishes as you typically would, using hot water; 2. In a separate basin, add one (1) teaspoon of unscented household liquid bleach for each gallon of warm water; 3. Soak the rinsed dishes in the water for at least one (1) minute; and 4. Let the dishes air dry completely before using them again.

Laundry: Generally, it is safe to wash clothes as usual.

Cleaning: Clean washable surfaces, areas, and toys with: 1. Commercially bottled water; 2. Boiled water, or 3. Water that has been disinfected with bleach.

Caring for Pets: Give pets commercially bottled water or boiled water that has cooled.

As per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to kill germs, bring water to a full rolling boil for one (1) minute. At elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for three (3) minutes. To avoid burns, allow boiled water to cool before you use it.
