SUMMARY: Between August 11 and August 17, 2025, investigators with the Sheriff’s Gangs/Narcotics Division, San Bernardino County Probation, California Highway Patrol, Department of Homeland Security Investigations, San Bernardino Police Department, in conjunction with personnel from the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division, multiple patrol stations, Upland Police Department, Ontario Police Department, Montclair Police Department, Chino Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations continued the targeted crime suppression efforts of Operation Consequences. Additionally, the San Bernardino Movement Against Street Hoodlums (SMASH) Street Enforcement Team (SET) conducted proactive patrols in the city of Rancho Cucamonga and surrounding jurisdictions.
During the one-week period, a focused operation took place in Ontario and surrounding communities on August 15, 2025. As a result, investigators contacted gang members and persons prohibited from possessing firearms. Investigators made 49 felony arrests and 66 misdemeanor arrests. Over 4.2 pounds of suspected methamphetamine was seized, along with suspected cocaine, herion, and ecstasy. Four firearms were recovered during the operation.
On November 5, 2024, California voters passed Proposition 36 titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act.” The proposition took effect on December 18, 2024, and reforms multiple laws from Proposition 47, which have been responsible for increasing homelessness, drug addiction and theft. Proposition 36 includes several new Penal and Health and Safety Codes that deputies will be able to apply during arrests when appropriate. These new charges can carry enhanced sentencing, as well as prevent offenders from being cite released prior to their court appearance. Proposition 36 applied to two of the above arrests.
During the focused operation, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Gangs Division conducted a joint investigation aimed at apprehending members and associates of the Ontario Varrio Sur criminal street gang who had outstanding arrest warrants for crimes related to gang activity.
The arrest warrants were the result of an investigation conducted in 2024 that led to the seizure of six firearms, two of which were ghost guns, three stolen vehicles, $13,000 in U.S. currency, 295 pounds of methamphetamine, 14 pounds of cocaine, and two pounds of heroin. During the investigation, 16 felony arrests were made.
In August 2025, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office filed criminal complaints against those involved for their crimes, including participation in a criminal street gang.
The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors authorized funds for county-wide crime suppression. The intent is to provide additional funding to the Sheriff’s Department, allowing for increased law enforcement services related to quality-of-life issues affecting the communities in our county.
Operation Consequences will focus on conducting targeted crime suppression operations and parole and probation checks in the High Desert and the Sheriff’s jurisdiction surrounding the city of San Bernardino. The operation will include personnel from the Sheriff’s Gangs/Narcotics Division, Specialized Enforcement Division, and patrol stations, as well as California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County Probation, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and Department of Homeland Security Investigations. Operation Consequences will take place over the next several months to curb violent crime, disrupt and dismantle targeted criminal street gangs, and locate and arrest criminals who are illegally possessing, manufacturing, and trafficking firearms.
