As the new school year begins this week, the Moorpark Police Department would like to remind the public to be cautious as they travel near schools.  As children and parents make their way to and from school, there will be an increase in traffic.  To ensure children get to school safely, the Moorpark Police Department has the following suggestions:
 
Motorists:
  • Slow down and always observe the speed limit and traffic laws in school zones. Moorpark deputies will be assigned to these areas to enforce traffic laws.
  • Be very careful when driving on neighborhood streets and around school zones.
  • Stay off your cell phone while driving.
  • Be alert for children walking and biking as you back out of your driveway or exit your garage.
  • If you plan to drop your child off at school, check with your school to see if traffic patterns have changed since last school year. Also, do not stop in the street to let them out. Rather, pull to the curb and let them out in a safe area.
  • Be aware of children who are walking or on bicycles, especially at intersections.
  • Stop your car when you see lights flashing on a school bus.  Flashing red lights indicate that the bus is stopped and students are getting on or off. Vehicles travelling in both directions need to stop when red lights are flashing. Do not start driving until the red lights stop flashing.
  • Pay attention to Crossing Guards and do not enter the intersection until all pedestrians are clear and the Crossing Guard has lowered their Stop Sign.
 
Bicyclists:
  • Wear your properly fitted bicycle helmet
  • Remind your children that bicyclists must follow the same rules of the road as vehicles.  They must stop for stop signs, red lights, and signal when turning.
  • Any child under 18 years of age is required by law to wear an approved helmet when riding bicycles and scooters.  Bicyclists not wearing helmets could be cited and the fine is over $100
 
Electric Bicycles
  • Brands like Sur-Ron, Talaria, and Segway are off-road only.
    Operating them on public roads, sidewalks, or parks can result in:
    • Citation or arrest
    • Vehicle impound
Pedestrians:
  • Never walk alone to school.  Always walk with a friend or an adult.
  • Only cross the street at a marked crosswalk.
  • Look left, right, and left again to ensure the roadway is clear before crossing.
  • Stay alert!  Put cell phones, games, and other devices away until you arrive at your destination.  If you wear earbuds, use them in one ear only, so that the other ear can hear sounds and possible hazards.
  • Make eye contact with drivers prior to crossing when vehicles are approaching or stopped.
