BHPD Media Release - Beverly Hills Police Department Alerts Older Adults to Distraction Theft Scams
Beverly Hills, Calif. – The Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) reminds community members, particularly older adults, to remain attentive to their surroundings to help prevent distraction thefts.
In distraction thefts, a suspect may engage a victim in conversation, ask for assistance, or create a diversion while another person takes personal property. These incidents can occur in public places, parking lots, or outside homes.
Recently, BHPD has noted a pattern of distraction thefts in which thieves offer “blessings” or spiritual protection while placing fake jewelry, gifts, or religious items on an older victim. In the process, the suspect discreetly removes the victim’s authentic jewelry without the victim noticing. The item most often taken is a necklace. The suspects tend to work in pairs, with one female dressed in modest clothing. A male accomplice and getaway car are usually nearby. In some cases, the suspects told the victim they were from Dubai.
In most cases, the targeted victims are women in their late 70’s, walking alone in a residential area.
Common Red Flags:
- Strangers asking for directions to a local market, 405 freeway, 10 freeway, or other locations
- Unsolicited spiritual, religious, or offers of blessings
- Strangers attempting to place items on you
- Overly friendly behavior from unfamiliar individuals
Tips to Stay Safe:
- Decline physical contact
- Be cautious when approached by strangers asking for help, directions, or money
- Walk away from unsolicited encounters
- If something feels unusual or suspicious, contact the Beverly Hills Police Department
BHPD is committed to public safety and encourages the public to report suspicious activity immediately.
