Pedestrian Safety Operation

During morning commute hours on Wednesday, August 20th, 2025, Officers from the Newark Police Department conducted a Pedestrian Safety Operation in continued efforts to ensure our roadways are safely shared by motor vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. The Pedestrian Safety Operation was an effort focused on pedestrian safety as Newark schools are back in session following the summer break.

During this operation, non-uniformed members of the Newark Police Department crossed streets in marked pedestrian crosswalks while Officers monitored drivers’ compliance. The Pedestrian Safety Operation resulted in the issuance of 48 pedestrian right-of-way violations and several warnings. Officers who participated in the Pedestrian Safety Operation used this opportunity to speak with motorists and educate drivers regarding pedestrian right-of-ways and other associated traffic laws.

In California, pedestrians have the right of way at all crosswalks and intersections, whether the crosswalk is marked or unmarked. Drivers must yield to pedestrians who are crossing the street, and pedestrians should always make sure it’s safe before stepping into the roadway.

Distracted driving such as texting, eating, or adjusting the radio can take your attention off the road for just a few seconds, but that’s long enough to cause a serious collision. Staying alert is critical, especially near schools, shopping centers, and neighborhoods where pedestrians are more likely to be present.

Avoid distractions, follow posted speed limits, and always be prepared to stop for those crossing. Safety is a shared responsibility. Let’s all do our part to keep Newark’s streets safe for everyone.
