Mandatory Water Restrictions

The Borough augments its water supply with the bulk purchase of treated water from the Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC).  Please be advised that PVWC recently experienced a large water main break in the City of Paterson, which is causing some areas in the Borough to experience low water pressure or brown water. The Borough is implementing MANDATORY water restrictions until further notice.  Water restrictions will help the Borough manage our water supply.  

THERE IS NO BOIL WATER ADVISORY FOR THE BOROUGH AT THIS TIME.

The water restriction guidelines are provided below: 

1. Water lawns (and outdoor plants) less frequently (2-3 times per week) for no more than 30 minutes. This allows the soil to absorb the water and enables roots to grow more deeply, which encourages drought tolerance;
2. Never water during the heat of the day, as this promotes evaporation and leads to water waste;
3. Sprinkler systems should be set to water after sunset or before dawn, and by law should be equipped with an automated shut-off switch that disables the system following rainfall.
4. Install water-saving shower heads and faucet aerators in the bathroom and kitchen (available at most home improvement stores and some supermarkets);
5. Do not let faucets run when brushing your teeth or washing the dishes;
6. Run washing machines and dishwashers only when they are full, or select the properly sized wash cycle for the current laundry load;
7. Use a broom to sweep the sidewalk, rather than a hose;
8. Use mulch and native plants to conserve water in the garden;
9. Use a rain barrel to capture water from a downspout to use later for watering gardens and plants;
10. Use soaker hoses or drip irrigation to water trees, gardens, and flower beds.

If you experience discolored water, caution should be used in washing white clothes; however, the discoloration poses no health hazard and the water is safe for consumption. This is expected and a normal occurrence when large existing water mains are disturbed. Please allow the water to run from your tap until it clears.
