Coyotes in Leonia
The Leonia Police Department is aware of reported coyote sightings, most recently in the northeast section of town. Coyotes are not new to Leonia and the Department has received similar reports over the past few years. The Police Department has reached out to wildlife officials for guidance and received the following information:
-Coyotes play an important role in our ecosystem and help control the rodent population.
-Relocating coyotes is not an option because it only moves the coyote to someone else's neighborhood.
-Coyote attacks on humans are extremely rare, however parents should monitor children and small pets, including in backyards.
-Remove food and water sources that may attract rodents and coyotes.
-Garbage should be put in secure containers and birdfeeders should be put away at night.
-If a coyote is present on your property, make them unwelcome by making loud noises or spraying them with a garden hose.
The coyote that has been recently seen in the northeast section of town appears to have mange, a skin disease (see attached picture). Mange is not uncommon among coyotes and foxes and can cause hair loss. The loss of fur can make identification of a coyote difficult, resulting in reports of a "mystery" animal.
As with all wildlife, residents should call Leonia Police Department if they observe an aggressive or sick/rabid coyote. For additional information, please visit the NJ Fish & Wildlife's webpage:
