15th Street to temporarily reopen
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has informed the City it will temporarily patch and reopen 15th Street to vehicular traffic starting at approximately 5 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 29, as construction for the Rebuild by Design project’s Resist structure continues in the area.
The NJDEP’s change in schedule is due to the discovery of unforeseen subsurface conditions along 15th Street which will require additional utility coordination, design updates, and procurement of materials. The NJDEP anticipates returning to 15th Street to close the road and complete this phase of construction this winter.
As part of the temporary street reopening, pedestrian access in the area will be modified to ensure safety. The eastern sidewalk along Garden Street will remain closed, while the western sidewalk will remain open. At the intersection of 15th and Garden Streets, the north-south crosswalk on the west side of the intersection will remain closed while the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection will be open. Access will be limited on the northern sidewalk of the intersection. Barricades will be placed throughout the area for pedestrian safety. Please do not move or attempt to go around barricades.
The RBDH project is a comprehensive flood protection system designed to safeguard portions of Hoboken, Jersey City, and Weehawken against storm surge flooding. During Hurricane Sandy, this type of flooding inundated the City with over 500 million gallons of water causing more than $100 million in private property damage. The project will integrate this flood-resistant infrastructure with new community amenities. In southern Hoboken, the Resist structure will be integrated into the urban landscape taking the form of wayfinding signage, planters, seating, public art, and more. In northern Hoboken, the Resist structure will run through Harborside Park, anticipated to be completed in 2027.
NJDEP hosted a public information session about the Marin Boulevard closure and the traffic mitigation plan.
