CRIME PREVENTION TIPS - VEHICLE BURGLARIES!
It seems like every so many weeks, I am reminded about a new vehicle burglary that occurred in our city. To avoid becoming the next victim of a vehicle burglary, please keep these simple things in mind as you park and exit your vehicle:
- Secure Your Vehicle: Roll up your car windows completely and activate the car alarm; however, do not rely solely on it to prevent theft. A car thief can break into your vehicle and escape in approximately 30 seconds, which is often too quick for an alarm to deter them.
- Keep Your Vehicle Tidy: Thieves love to look for easy targets! Ensure that nothing is left visible inside your car. Almost any item that can be seen from outside—even if you consider it to be of little value—might be perceived as valuable by a thief. Spare change, sunglasses, or even an empty bag (which a thief might assume contains something) could be enticing to them.
- Conceal All Proof: Store your electronics and accessories out of sight, or take them with you. The mere presence of these items could attract thieves, including power cords, adapters, and GPS mounts. If you remove the suction cup from your windshield, be sure to clean the ring left behind; it serves as a clear indication that you own a GPS device.
- Stash Before You Park: Make it a routine to place items you wish to keep hidden in your trunk before reaching your destination. Thieves often watch busy parking lots for individuals who are about to hide valuable items.
- Park Smart: Choose to park in a busy, well-lit area and steer clear of being obscured by larger vehicles, fences, or dense foliage. Refrain from parking in isolated or dimly lit locations.
Report Break-Ins: If you witness a break-in in progress, immediately call 911. Provide the dispatcher with as much detail as possible, including:
- Location: Share an address, block number, or specific spot in a parking lot. Description of the suspect. Offer as much detail as you can, such as sex, race, age, height, weight, hair color and length, facial hair color and length, clothing colors and styles, and any distinguishing features like tattoos or piercings.
- Direction: If the suspect flees, indicate the direction they went. If they escape on a bicycle or in a vehicle, describe the color, make, model, and license plate number, if it is safe to do so.
- And Never Ever: Chase a fleeing felon. While your valuables are replaceable, you are not!
