Man Dies after Being Shot by Neighbor in Newberry Springs; Suspect Taken into Custody

LOCATION: 45500 Block of Yermo Road, Newberry Springs
SUSPECT(S): Paul Weinhold, 53-year-old Resident of Newberry Springs, CA
VICTIM(S): Andrew Sperhac, 59-year-old Resident of Newberry Springs, CA
SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at approximately 7:24 p.m., deputies from the Barstow Station were dispatched to a residence in Newberry Springs for the report of an assault with a deadly weapon. When deputies arrived, they located Andrew Sperhac outside the residence. Sperhac sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was later pronounced deceased.
The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, assumed the investigation. Investigators learned Sperhac and his neighbor, Paul Weinhold, were involved in an argument. During the argument, a shooting occurred. Weinhold was arrested at the incident location and booked for murder. He remains in custody at the High Desert Detention Center without bail.
