IMPD Begins New VIN Inspection Process
INDIANAPOLIS -- In our continued effort to be more efficient, IMPD is updating its vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection process. Moving forward, VIN inspections will now be completed at designated IMPD district headquarter locations instead of by on-duty patrol officers in the field.
This new process only applies to inspections conducted by IMPD. You can still have VIN inspections completed at any Indiana BMV branch or BMV-certified full or partial service provider at no cost.
This update supports Chief Chris Bailey’s 2025 strategic priorities by making sure officers are readily available to respond to emergency situations while ensuring essential community services, like VIN inspections, continue without delay.
“Every minute counts when someone’s safety is at risk,” said Chief Chris Bailey. “By shifting non-emergency tasks like VIN inspections to roll call sites, we’re making sure our patrol officers are available to respond to violent crimes and in-progress calls,” he said.
What does this mean for you?
Members of the public and non-profit businesses
· Community members and non-profit businesses can go to indy.gov to view available hours and locations, as well as access the necessary VIN inspection form. They will then bring their vehicle(s) and printed VIN inspection form to their selected district location during the designated hours. VIN inspections will be completed on-site by IMPD employees at no cost.
For-profit businesses
· At this time, for-profit businesses will be treated the same as any other standard request. Businesses only need to bring the printed BMV form and the vehicle(s) to the selected roll call.
Please note: beginning in early 2026, a fee will be required for for-profit businesses. More information will be shared as that time approaches.
Officers will still be dispatched to inspect the VINs on inoperable vehicles, but only during select hours.
Why the change?
This updated process is designed to improve efficiency by allowing IMPD patrol officers to stay focused on urgent calls for service, making sure they’re available when the community needs them most. At the same time, it offers community members the flexibility to choose a convenient time and location to have their VIN inspection completed.
