Sinatra Drive traffic impacts Sept. 3; Take the Washington St. survey; Come to 9/11 Interfaith Memorial Service; Contact senior services

Sinatra Drive temporarily closed for construction tomorrow, Sept. 3

Sinatra Drive from Fifth Street to Sinatra Drive North will be temporarily closed on Wednesday, Sept. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for ongoing construction activities as part of the Waterfront Reconstruction Project.

All northbound vehicular traffic will be detoured to alternative routes on Washington Street or Bloomfield Street. Southbound traffic remains diverted to Hudson Street.

The Waterfront Reconstruction Project, which follows a thorough investigation triggered by a sinkhole near Sybil’s Cave in June 2024, will ensure the long-term safety, resilience, and functionality of the critical waterfront infrastructure and lay the foundation for the Sinatra Drive Redesign Project and the first phase of Maritime Park. This first phase of the project aims to rebuild and stabilize the eroding concrete seawall beneath portions of Sinatra Drive and the waterfront walkway from approximately the gazebo near Seventh Street to the skate park near Ninth Street.

This phase of the project is expected to be completed this fall.

Provide feedback on Washington Street Vision Zero safety

The City of Hoboken is inviting community members to take a brief online survey to share their feedback on Washington Street road safety as part of the City’s ongoing Vision Zero initiative. In 2019, the City completed construction of the redesign of Washington Street, which added loading zones, bike lanes, and high visibility bus stop markings, among other safety improvements, to the corridor.

The survey is available online at https://arcg.is/1vi5bj2 and takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It is scheduled to close on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 9 p.m.

Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla signed an executive order in 2019, initiating the City’s ambitious Vision Zero campaign to eliminate all traffic-related deaths and injuries by 2030 through the Vision Zero initiative. The City has implemented a variety of safety improvements, including:

  • A reduced citywide speed limit of 20 mph
  • Expanded school zones with reduced 15 mph speed limits
  • Improved visibility through daylighting at 2/3 of intersections citywide
  • Upgraded pedestrian infrastructure such as curb extensions and retimed signals to reduce the occurrence of pedestrian-vehicle conflicts at intersections along Washington Street.
  • Installed bike lanes on over 40 percent of Hoboken’s street miles
  • Initiated a comprehensive curbside management strategy

As a result of these efforts, Hoboken has maintained a record of zero traffic fatalities for eight consecutive years.

Now, the City is seeking additional public input to help build on this progress and ensure that Washington Street remains safe and accessible for all road users, whether they walk, bike, drive, or take mass transit.

Hoboken to host annual September 11th Interfaith Memorial Service

All members of the public are invited to attend the City of Hoboken’s annual September 11th Interfaith Memorial Service on Thursday, Sept.11, at 5 p.m. in the northwest area of Pier A Park next to the City's 9/11 Memorial.

The memorial is aligned in the direction of the World Trade Center site and includes a steel beam base with a glass panel for each of the 56 Hoboken residents lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Each panel is engraved with a name and is illuminated at night. The memorial is located within the grove of ginkgo trees which are also aligned with the World Trade Center that were planted in 2002 as a living memorial. The perimeter of the grove includes steel plates on the ground engraved with quotes from those who were there on that fateful day.
