A retail theft suspect was arrested for robbery after stealing store merchandise and attempting to fight and flee from loss prevention.
San Mateo, CA – On September 2, 2025, at 08:49 p.m., the San Mateo Police Department responded to Macy’s, located at 115 Hillsdale Mall, San Mateo, on a report of loss prevention employees fighting and chasing a male in the area of the store. Officers arrived and met with Macy’s Loss Prevention Officers, who stated they had detained a shoplifter, identified as Fernando Escotorivera, for shoplifting.
During the investigation, officers learned that Escotorivera had attempted to steal approximately $550.50 worth of Macy’s merchandise in the combination of clothing and cologne but was confronted by loss prevention employees for the theft. Escotorivera fought with loss prevention employees, attempting to escape the detention, and an employee was headbutted during the altercation. The employee sustained only minor injury and later declined medical attention. Escotorivera was then detained and escorted back to Macy’s Loss Prevention Office.
A combination of store surveillance footage, statements, and recovered merchandise led to the probable cause arrest of Escotorivera for robbery. Escotorivera was transported to the San Mateo County Jail where he was booked for his charge.
