Clarification on Hiero Day 2025
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) and the City of Oakland want to clarify previously shared information about the Hiero Day 2025 event.
For events of this size, the City of Oakland requires that applications be submitted at least 90 days in advance. This allows the City to coordinate with multiple departments and gives OPD enough time to review the event and plan staffing. Proper planning and timely applications are vital for the safety and success of events.
Hiero Day 2025 organizers submitted permit applications on August 9, 2025, about three weeks before the proposed event date. It is also important to note that although the event still had an outstanding balance with OPD for services from 2023, the City remained willing to work with organizers in good faith to support this year’s event. However, the organizers changed the venue without notice.
Cultural events such as Hiero Day are a valuable reflection of Oakland. We will continue to support the efforts of organizers creating community celebrations. OPD and the City will continue working together to promote local arts, culture, and community events.
We look forward to working with producers to bring future Hiero Day events back to Oakland.
