For the second night in a row, officers arrested a DUI driver after a reckless driving pursuit.

On September 3rd, 2025, at approximately 21:45 PM, a Petaluma Police Officer observed a vehicle engaging in an exhibition of speed and reckless driving within the city limits near Petaluma Boulevard North and Skillman Lane. The driver, later identified as Gadiel Cortez-Diaz (21-year-old, Petaluma Resident), failed to yield when officers attempted a traffic stop and instead led officers on a brief pursuit into the western unincorporated area of Petaluma.
 
The pursuit concluded safely on Cavanaugh Lane when Cortez-Diaz pulled over. During the investigation, officers determined Cortez-Diaz was under the influence of alcohol. Open containers of alcohol were also discovered inside the vehicle. Cortez-Diaz was arrested on multiple charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, reckless evading, and possession of open containers in a vehicle.
 
No collisions or injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The swift actions of officers ensured the safety of the public by preventing the driver from continuing to endanger others on the roadway.
 
This incident underscores the significant dangers impaired and reckless drivers pose to the community. Thanks to the quick response of officers, a potentially serious collision was prevented.
 
The Petaluma Police Department remains committed to keeping the community safe by taking reckless and impaired drivers off the road. Members of the public are reminded to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or utilize alternative transportation if consuming alcohol.
 
The case will be forwarded to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office for review.
