HNL Alert from the Oahu Department of Emergency Management

Hurricane Kiko Update #2
Saturday 9/6 5pm
The National Weather Service 5pm forecast update continues to show Hurricane Kiko passing north of the Hawaiian Islands next week. Kiko remains a category 4 hurricane but is expected to weaken to a tropical storm over the next few days before it tracks north of Oahu. While the track is north of the island, impacts may be felt outside the forecast cone.
High surf will build through the islands ahead of the storm. As the storm passes, there could be high winds and heavy rain which may cause power outages and flooding. It is still too early to know exactly where impacts may be felt or how damaging the storm may be.
Remember, Hurricane Kiko is still far enough away from Oahu that small changes to its track could make a significant difference in how much, if any, damage is seen on Oahu.
The City and County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management continues to encourage residents to take action to be ready in case of impacts from Hurricane Kiko.
- Prepare your home: Remove and store items in yards, carports, or anywhere else outdoors that may become projectiles in high winds. This includes furniture, plant pots, keiki toys, and anything else that could be picked up by winds. Take photos or videos of your property in case you need to report damages later.
- Check your 14-day supply kit: Collect your items and store them where you can find them easily. Check batteries and other devices. Prepare water storage containers and shelf-stable food.
- Talk to your family about your hurricane plan: Make sure everyone in your household knows what they should do during the storm. Check that your contact information and other important details are up to date.
- Stay informed: Follow along for updates. Encourage others to sign up for HNL Alert, subscribed to trusted social media accounts, and follow updates from local tv and radio stations.
