Boil Water Advisory in effect until further notice; Water distribution continues while supplies last; Residents may see open hydrants
The City of Hoboken remains under a Boil Water Advisory, following a 12” water main break at the intersection of Garden and Newark Streets earlier today. The break resulted in water pressure dropping below the recommended threshold, prompting the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to issue the advisory, as a precaution.
The break was quickly isolated, and Veolia crews remain on site this evening for repairs. Roads in the area are closed, including Newark Street between Bloomfield and Garden Streets, and Garden Street between First Street and Observer Highway.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., a second break was reported on Ninth Street between Garden and Bloomfield Streets. Residents are asked to avoid that area as Veolia conducts repairs.
Customers in the immediate area of the breaks may notice low or no water pressure while repairs are being made. All residents and businesses are reminded to boil water for consumption, for at least one minute, even if it is filtered. (See more below)
The boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice. Veolia will notify Hoboken customers when testing determines the water supply is deemed satisfactory and the boil water order can be lifted.
Veolia will continue to monitor pressure throughout the city’s water distribution system and, may open hydrants to relieve pressure, if necessary.
Boil water for consumption
Residents and businesses should bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute for the following, even if their water is filtered at home: drinking, cooking, baking, washing dishes, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets, or other consumption.
Low water pressure could potentially allow for the presence of harmful microbes in the system. Microbes in drinking water can cause illness and could pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes.
