Advisory

Boil Water Advisory remains in effect; Additional restoration needed at Garden & Newark site; Water samples being tested

The City of Hoboken remains under a boil water advisory, following a citywide drop in water pressure during yesterday’s water main break near the intersection of Garden and Newark Streets. The water pressure fell below the acceptable threshold, potentially allowing for the presence of microbes in the system, prompting the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to institute the advisory.

Following the repair of the initial break and a repressurizing of the system, Veolia crews collected samples from the Hoboken water distribution system. Lab testing began this morning, and results are anticipated within approximately 24-hours of the start of the tests. The NJDEP will review the results and determine if the Boil Water Advisory can be lifted.

Residents and businesses should bring their water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, and allow it to cool, for the following:

  • Washing dishes
  • Drinking
  • Cooking
  • Baking
  • Making ice cubes
  • Taking medication
  • Brushing teeth
  • Washing food
  • Mixing baby formula or food
  • Mixing juices or drinks
  • Feeding pets
  • All other consumption

Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes.

For more information, customers can visit mywater.veolia.us or call Veolia customer service at 800-422-0141.

Water distribution sites open

While residents can boil their water for consumption, the City has made drinking water available for pickup at the following distribution sites, while supplies last:

  • Monroe Gardens, 221 Jackson Street
  • Multi Service Center, 124 Grand Street
  • Fox Hill Gardens, 311 13th Street.

Residents are asked to take only what they need as supplies are limited.

Traffic Impacts

While crews repaired the initial break on the 12” water main on Newark Street, additional repairs to infrastructure in the area continue. Newark Street remains closed between Washington Street and Park Avenue. Garden Street is closed from Second Street to Observer Highway. Residents are asked to continue to avoid the area.

Veolia will continue to monitor the water distribution system’s pressure throughout the day and may open hydrants to relieve pressure, if necessary.
