9/11/25 Chewelah Water System Update
The Chewelah Public Works Department has determined that the City's water system experienced an uncommon event in which two water pumps simultaneously activated, stirring up sediment in the system and resulting in discolored water. Normally, the system's pumps alternate their operations, reducing the probability of sediment being agitated.
The Public Works Department fully inspected the water system and concluded that it is properly funcitoning - the pumps responded to unique circumstances created by a combination of water use and resevoir levels.
At this time, the City's water is nearly 90% clear and the discoloration should be fully resolved by the morning of September 12, 2025. While this circumstance was uncommon, the City takes proactive measures by flushing the water system twice per year to keep sediment levels low. The next scheduled flush is set for the week of October 6-10, 2025.
