CORRECTION: Localized Boil Water Advisory issued from Adams St. west between Sixth & 10th Streets; Repairs to damaged water main continue
The previous Nixle from the City of Hoboken regarding the localized Boil Water Advisory had the incorrect southern boundary. It is Sixth Street. The corrected Nixle is as follows:
Veolia has notified the City of Hoboken that portions of the City are under a Boil Water Advisory.
Veolia water customers between Sixth and Tenth Streets, from Adams Street to the western Hoboken border (inclusive of both sides of all streets within this area) are under a Boil Water Advisory and should boil their tap water before consumption. The Boil Water Advisory was issued as a precaution after a water main was struck by a contractor at Seventh and Madison Streets, which caused some customers to experience a significant loss of pressure or be without water.
The limited area Boil Water Advisory will remain in effect until further notice. Once repairs are made and samples can be taken for water quality tests, which typically take a minimum of 24 hours, the NJDEP will determine if the water quality is satisfactory and the Boil Water Advisory can be lifted in the affected area. Veolia will notify impacted Hoboken customers when testing indicates the boil water order can be lifted and the water supply is deemed satisfactory.
Boil water for consumption
Residents and businesses in the impacted area should boil their water for at least one minute for the following, even if their water is filtered at home: drinking, cooking, baking, washing dishes, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets, or other consumption.
Low water pressure could potentially allow for the presence of harmful microbes in the system. Microbes in drinking water can cause illness and could pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.
Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes.
The following measures are also recommended for those under the boil water advisory:
- Throw away uncooked food or beverages or ice cubes made with tap water during the day of the advisory.
- Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking.
- Do not swallow water while showering or bathing.
- Rinse hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle.
- Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms.
- Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.
- Provide pets with drinking water that has been boiled (and cooled).
Please continue to boil your water or use bottled water until you are notified that the water quality is satisfactory. This advisory will remain in effect until repairs are completed, and testing shows the water quality to be safe.
