Crews have completed repairs on a water main damaged by a contractor near the intersection of Madison and Seventh Street, and affected roads have reopened. Veolia water customers on both sides of all streets between Sixth and Tenth Streets and Adams Street to the western Hoboken border at Marshall Street, remain under a Boil Water Advisory until further notice and should boil their tap water before consumption. The Boil Water Advisory was issued as a precaution after a water main was struck by a contractor at Seventh and Madison Streets, which caused some customers to experience a significant loss of pressure or be without water.  

Veolia is currently collecting samples for water quality testing. These tests take a minimum of 24 hours. Once results are received, they will be reviewed by the NJDEP who will determine if they meet all water quality standards and the Boil Water Advisory can be lifted in the impacted area. Veolia will notify customers when the Boil Water Advisory is lifted and the water supply is deemed satisfactory.   

Boil water for consumption  
 
Residents and businesses in the impacted area should boil their water for at least one minute for the following, even if their water is filtered at home: drinking, cooking, baking, washing dishes, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets, or other consumption.   
 
Low water pressure could potentially allow for the presence of harmful microbes in the system. Microbes in drinking water can cause illness and could pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.  

Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes. 

The following measures are also recommended for those under the boil water advisory: 

• Throw away uncooked food or beverages or ice cubes made with tap water during the day of the advisory. 
• Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking.  
• Do not swallow water while showering or bathing.   
• Rinse hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle. 
• Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms. 
• Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries. 
• Provide pets with drinking water that has been boiled (and cooled).   

Please continue to boil your water or use bottled water until you are notified that the water quality is satisfactory. This advisory will remain in effect until repairs are completed, and testing shows the water quality to be safe.

Drinking water available for impacted residents 

While residents can boil their water for consumption, the City has made drinking water available for those impacted by the boil water advisory. Water can be picked up at the plaza outside of 770 Jackson St. until 10 p.m., or until supplies last.   

Residents are asked to take only what they need as supplies are limited.
