The New York City Office of Emergency Management will conduct a citywide test of the Wireless Emergency Alert System (WEA) Thursday, September 18th at 12:00 PM.
 
The WEA system is used to warn the public about dangerous weather, missing children, and other critical situations through alerts on mobile phones. Mobile phones that are switched on and within range of an active cell tower should be capable of receiving the test message and should only receive the message once.

New Yorkers are urged to ensure that their devices are enabled to receive these emergency messages. Even though Thursday's message will be a test, enabling your phone to receive test messages can help you confirm if your device is ready to receive them during an emergency.
