Case Charged in Relation to May 26, 2023 Homicide
 
EMERYVILLE, CA — On May 26, 2023, Officers from the Emeryville Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at the intersection of 41st Street and San Pablo Avenue. Upon arrival, Officers located an adult male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency personnel, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Following an extensive investigation by the Emeryville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Section, the suspect was identified as 42-year-old James Allen Wheeler of Oakland, California. The case was submitted to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, which subsequently filed a charge of Penal Code 187 – Homicide against Wheeler.
The Emeryville Police Department extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Victim Dexter Appleby. We also want to thank members of the community for their support throughout the investigation.
