INCIDENT: Lethal Force Encounter
LOCATION: 27083 Strawberry Lane, Helendale
SUSPECT(S): Anthony Benigno, 78-year-old Helendale Resident
SUMMARY: On September 15, 2025, deputies from the Victor Valley Station responded to 27083 Strawberry Lane for a male outside the location with a handgun. Upon arriving, deputies located Anthony Benigno inside a vehicle threatening suicide. Deputies began communicating with Benigno in an attempt to have him exit the car. He refused to put down the gun and exit.
Sheriff’s crisis negotiators and Specialized Enforcement personnel responded to assist. Negotiators communicated with Benigno for over five hours, attempting to come to a peaceful resolution. Attempts were unsuccessful and a lethal force encounter occurred resulting in Benigno being struck by gunfire after pointing the handgun at deputies. Despite lifesaving measures, Benigno was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Detectives with the Sheriff’ Specialized Investigations Division responded and assumed the investigation.
