Take Five Briefing – 9/16

Here is the latest Take Five briefing from the September 16, 2025, meeting of the Mayor and Borough Council.

1) Flu & Covid-19 Vaccine Reminder:  On behalf of the Board of Health, Council Member Postelnik encouraged residents to get their annual Flu and Covid-19 vaccines. He also reported on the recent New Jersey Department of Health executive directive, which makes it easier for people to get the Covid-19 vaccine. Anyone six months and older is eligible, and children three and up can now get vaccinated at pharmacies without a prescription.

2) Townwide Garage Sale Weekend – 10/18 & 10/19:  Borough Administrator Jover reminded residents that the annual Garage Sale weekend is on Saturday, October 18 and Sunday, October 19. If you are looking to sign up, click here, or visit the Century 21 JJ Laufer office. There will be a townwide bulk pick-up the week after the annual garage sale weekend on Tuesday, October 21 (North Side, Triangle, Business District) and Thursday, October 23 (South Side); there will be no recycling pick-up that week to allow DPW the time needed to collect the bulk waste.

3) Woodbridge & Upper Raritan Avenue Projects Moving Ahead: After years of planning, improvements to both Woodbridge Avenue (Volkert St to Edison border) and the Upper Raritan Avenue (6th Ave to Edison border) will be getting started this fall. On Woodbridge Ave, the Borough has partnered with Middlesex County to replace the water main and reconstruct the roadway. On Upper Raritan Avenue, NJDOT will be implementing the first phase of the much-awaited road diet, which is designed to slow traffic down by reducing the number of travel lanes and reallocating space for dedicated bike lanes. Residents will be notified as soon as an official start date and schedule are set.

4) Updated Stormwater Infrastructure Map: Borough Council approved a professional services agreement with CME Associates to prepare an updated stormwater infrastructure map for the Borough. This project is required to meet the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s latest stormwater permit standards and will improve how the Borough manages its system.

5) Highland Park Oral History Project: Borough Council authorized an application to the NJ Council on the Humanities (NJCH) Community History grant program to support the Historical Commission’s oral history project. For the past year, the Historical Commission has been attending NJCH workshops to build this program out and they are now ready to put their vision into action. The project consists of several public sessions where residents can join the Historical Commission to share stories about the history of Highland Park, and contribute to a larger mosaic of local history. The end result will be an archived, fully transcribed long-form oral history of the Borough.
