E Bike Information, applicable laws and safety concerns

Township Police have observed an increase in illegal electric and gas-powered dirt bikes around town.

We will have zero-tolerance if someone is caught riding one of these illegal vehicles.

Not only will you receive traffic summonses, but depending on the circumstance the bike may be impounded.

Electric and Gas-Powered dirt Bikes (pictured below) are not permitted on public roads unless they are properly registered, insured and driven by a licensed operator.  These are off-road vehicles designated for use only on private property or designated tracks.  If the bike does not have pedals, it is not classified as an E-Bike, rather a motorcycle/ dirt bike and/or moped.

Attached is a photo of an electric/ gasoline powered dirt bikes/ mopeds that are not allowed on public roadways (Notice the lack of pedals):

Electric Bicycles fall under three categories, Class I, Class II and Class III:

Class I – (Pedal Assist only – No Throttle) – Class 1 electric Bicycle is only a pedal assist.  It does not have a throttle.  Limited to a stop speed of 20 MPH and are only activated when the rider pedals.  There is no age limit, however riders still must follow the same laws as regular bicycles.

Class II – Class II is an electric bicycle with a motor that can operate independently through a throttle or with pedal assist.  If the Class II bicycle exceeds 20 MPH and has over 750 watts or is larger than 50cc, it must be registered as a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV).

Class III – Class III is categorized as a motorized bicycle.  The main distinction between Class II and Class III are the maximum speeds.  These have the capability to reach a top speed of 28 MPH.  Due to the fact they reach over 20 MPH, they must be registered as a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV).

The attached photos show an Electric Bicycle (E-Bike) that IS allowed on public roadways (Notice the pedals) along with guidelines and applicable laws for New Jersey’s E-Bike and E-Scooter Laws.
