On Friday September 19, 2025, at 7:02pm officers were called to a home in the 2100 block of Savoy on someone breaking into the victim's home. While officers were enroute, they learned the suspect was related to the residents in the home and had made threats to harm them and police. The home was surrounded and the APD Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was called out. The suspect was able to get out of the home and ran on foot. Police negotiators tried to talk to him while officers were searching the area to locate him. Through investigation it was discovered he was able to get a ride to a home in the 1500 block of Smiley. That home was contained by officers and negotiators made contact by phone with the suspect again. He exited the house on Smiley and was taken into custody. Derek Melendez, male age 18, was booked into the Randall County Jail for burglary of a habitation.
