San Mateo Police Arrest Suspect for DUI Crash Causing Injury After Fleeing Scene
San Mateo, CA – On Friday, September 19, 2025, at 6:10pm, the San Mateo Police Department received a call of a crash at 12th and Palm Ave. It was determined the driver of a Toyota CHR ran a stop sign and hit a Toyota Prius. The driver of the CHR, later identified as Eddy Sifuentes Hernandez, left his vehicle at the scene of the crash and walked away. He was located shortly after on 12th Ave. where it was determined he had been drinking and driving. A preliminary blood alcohol test showed he had a .196% BAC, more than double the legal limit of .08%. Both Sifuentes Hernandez and the other driver were evaluated for their minor injuries. Sifuentes Hernandez was arrested for driving with a suspended license, while drunk, causing injury. He was arrested and transported to San Mateo County Jail where he was booked.
Ironically, as this investigation was unfolding, San Mateo PD was setting up for a DUI checkpoint in the area of E. Hillsdale Blvd. and Saratoga Dr. During that event, no DUI arrests were made, but over the weekend, SMPD made a total of (4) DUI arrests. Three involved crashes (2 of which were hit and runs-subjects located), and the fourth involved a stolen vehicle. All suspects were arrested.
Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is against the law. As witnessed above, your decision-making ability is limited and has dangerous consequences. Nationally, more than 10,000 people a year are killed by drunk drivers. Do not drive impaired.
