Safety Doesn’t Take a Semester Off
With the 2025-2026 school year underway, the Hawthorne Police Department urges everyone to stay sharp and safe around school zones. Whether you’re walking, driving, or navigating the drop-off line, school zone safety is everyone’s job.Safety Doesn’t Take a Semester Off
For Pedestrians:
- Use the crosswalk. Always cross at marked areas—never mid-block or between cars.
- Lead by example. Parents, teach kids to choose the safe route, not the quick one.
- Be seen. Walk to a visible crossing point so drivers can spot you in time.
School zones require your full attention. A few seconds of patience can prevent a tragedy.
- Full stops only. Yield completely to pedestrians in crosswalks.
- Stay stopped. Don’t move until the crosswalk and crossing guard are clear.
- Watch closely. Crossing guards may step back into the streetdon’t go until they signal.
Maintain a smooth and safe environment for everyone.
- Curbside only. Always pull up on the school side no exceptions.
- Exit safely. Kids should step out on the sidewalk side, never into traffic.
- No double parking. It blocks visibility and endangers students.
- Park and walk. If the curb is full, park legally and walk your child to a safe crossing point.
