On April 29, 2024, deputies were conducting a license checkpoint near Harmony Grove Road when Brown was stopped. A subsequent search of Brown and the vehicle turned up 31 grams of methamphetamine.
“The reality is that meth is a poison that destroys lives, families, and entire communities,” said Sheriff Ricky T. Buchanan. “This sentence sends a clear message that if you choose to traffic this deadly drug in McDowell County, you will be held accountable.”
Sheriff Buchanan also expressed his gratitude to District Attorney Ted Bell and his team for their partnership in bringing the case to a successful conclusion.
The Marion Police Department assisted in the incident.

On Sept. 22, 2025, 30-year-old Kyle Wayne Brown pled guilty to the following charges:
- Felony Possession of Methamphetamine
- Felony Possession with Intent to Sell, Manufacture or Deliver Methamphetamine
- Felony Trafficking in Methamphetamine (2 counts)
