Rider of Motorized Mini Bike Rear Ends Stopped Vehicle and is Flown to Hospital for Injuries

INCIDENT: Major Traffic Collision

LOCATION: Fifth Avenue/Cajon Street, Hesperia

INVOLVED PARTY (1): Driver - Catarino Lopez (Resident in the City of Hesperia)
INVOLVED VEHICLE (1): Blue Mini Bike
INVOLVED PARTY(2): Driver- Anthony Rivera (Resident in the City of Hesperia)
INVOLVED VEHICLE(2): Grey 2004 Toyota Scion



SUMMARY: On Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at approximately 12:15 p.m., deputies from the Hesperia Sheriff's Station and rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a two vehicle traffic collision near the intersection of Fifth Avenue, and Cajon Street, in Hesperia.

Upon arrival, the driver of a blue mini motorized bike, Catarino Lopez, was located in the middle of Fifth Avenue with major trauma. San Bernardino County Fire personnel transported Lopez to the Hesperia Airport to be flown to a trauma center.

The preliminary investigation showed the mini bike was traveling north on Fifth Avenue behind the Toyota Scion. The driver of a Toyota drove north on Fifth Avenue and prepared to make a left turn into an alley way. The Toyota driver activated his left turn signal and slowed to make a left turn. As the Toyota began the turn, he felt the mini bike collide into the rear of the Toyota.  Lopez did not wear a helmet at the time of the collision and sustained major injuires. Drugs and/or alcohol were not found to be a factor in this collsion.

Fifth Avenue, north of Cajon Street, was closed in the affected area for approximately an hour while deputies from the Hesperia Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) processed the scene.
