With the holidays right around the corner, I wanted to share a familiar term that’s become part of the “community policing” conversation: the Porch Pirate! Porch pirate theft refers to the act of criminals taking packages that are left unattended on front porches. This crime results in billions of dollars in losses for consumers annually and has emerged as a significant national issue. Such thefts frequently happen during the day, with small, high-value packages often being the preferred targets. These incidents can be monitored through delivery notifications and home security systems. To address this problem, homeowners have several options: report thefts, install security cameras and doorbells, require signatures upon delivery, utilize package lockers, or arrange for packages to be delivered to a workplace or a family member’s residence.
