Statement from Mayor Anthony Copeland & Chief of Police José Rivera Regarding ICE Activity in East Chicago

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 9, 2025

Statement from Mayor Anthony Copeland and Chief of Police José Rivera Regarding ICE Activity in East Chicago, IN

East Chicago, IN — Today, our city faced an unexpected and deeply concerning development. Around midday, the Office of the Mayor was alerted by the media to the circulation of an online video appearing to show Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducting an arrest within the city limits.
Shortly after, East Chicago Police Department confirmed that ICE agents were staged in the publicly accessible portion of the department’s parking lot.
We want to be clear: The East Chicago Police Department is not involved in any operations with ICE. We have not coordinated, supported, or participated in any immigration enforcement actions, and no information has been shared with ICE regarding such matters. Our department’s parking facility is open to the public and may occasionally be used by other law enforcement entities. However, their presence does not indicate cooperation or endorsement.
Mayor Anthony Copeland stated: “Today will be remembered as the day that tested my resolve. The lack of prior notification from ICE was troubling, but I understand that federal agencies are not required to inform local governments of their presence. I urge our residents to remain calm and not engage with ICE agents, either verbally or physically. We are actively working through law enforcement channels to understand and contain this action.”
We recognize the community’s concern and emotional response to this event. A protest has been scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 1:00 PM at City Hall. We fully support the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech.
Chief José Rivera added: “We remain committed to protecting the rights and safety of all East Chicago residents. Our department is here to serve and support the community — not to participate in immigration enforcement.”
The East Chicago Police Department will be present during the protest to ensure public safety and safeguard everyone’s right to peaceful expression.
Mayor Copeland concluded: “This is a moment for unity, not division. I pray that our community will face this challenge as one. There will be many who will foolishly inform you that the city is empowered to take action against ICE this is not only false but it is dangerous misinformation.”
If residents have questions or concerns, they are encouraged to contact the East Chicago Police Department directly.
